The Centre for Gender Studies (CGS) at the University of Kelaniya is committed to advancing gender equality, equity, and social justice through research, education, advocacy, capacity building, and community engagement. As an interdisciplinary academic centre, CGS seeks to create a supportive and inclusive environment where knowledge on gender-related issues can be generated, shared, discussed, and applied in ways that contribute to meaningful social change.
Drawing on expertise from across the University, the Centre brings together academics, researchers, students, practitioners, professionals, civil society organisations, and members of the wider community. Through these collaborations, CGS promotes dialogue, knowledge exchange, and joint initiatives that address emerging and ongoing gender-related challenges. The Centre also provides a platform for interdisciplinary discussion, encouraging diverse perspectives and supporting evidence-based approaches to gender equality and inclusion.
A key area of the Centre’s work is research. CGS conducts and supports research on contemporary gender issues, including gender equality, education, leadership, social inclusion, community development, policy, workplace participation, and other areas that influence the experiences of individuals and communities. Through research reports, publications, seminars, conferences, and academic discussions, the Centre contributes to the wider body of knowledge in gender studies and encourages the use of research to inform policy, practice, and institutional development.
To contribute towards an inclusive and equitable society in which individuals of all genders are respected, empowered, and provided equal opportunities to participate and thrive.
To advance gender equality through research, education, training, advocacy, knowledge sharing, and community engagement while strengthening collaboration within the University and wider society.
