Objectives of the Centre for Gender Studies
The Centre for Gender Studies, University of Kelaniya (CGSUK), is committed to promoting gender equality and equity through research, education, knowledge resources, professional expertise, and public engagement. Its objectives are to:
1. Initiate and Conduct Quality Research on Gender Issues
To initiate, facilitate, and conduct high-quality, interdisciplinary research on gender-related issues, with particular attention to the Sri Lankan context. The Centre seeks to generate, document, and disseminate knowledge on emerging and longstanding gender concerns and to encourage research that contributes to academic scholarship, policy development, and social understanding.
2. Establish and Maintain a Cutting-Edge Resource Centre on Gender Studies
To develop and maintain a comprehensive and contemporary resource centre on Gender Studies, providing students, academics, researchers, policymakers, and the wider community with access to relevant books, journals, research reports, digital resources, publications, and other scholarly materials relating to gender.
3. Conduct Educational and Training Programmes on Gender Studies and Gender Mainstreaming
To design and conduct educational, professional, and training programmes in Gender Studies, gender mainstreaming, gender-responsive approaches, and related areas for university communities and other interested groups. The Centre also seeks to provide opportunities for the future development of postgraduate diplomas, degrees, certificates, and other academic programmes in Gender Studies.
4. Provide Expertise and Advice on Gender Equality and Equity
To provide academic expertise, research-based advice, consultancy, and guidance on issues relating to gender equality and equity. This includes contributing gender perspectives to policies, programmes, institutional practices, research, education, and decision-making, particularly within higher education and other relevant sectors.
5. Create Public Consciousness on Gender Equity and Equality
To promote public awareness and understanding of gender equity and equality through seminars, conferences, workshops, lectures, publications, media engagement, awareness programmes, community outreach, and other appropriate forms of knowledge dissemination. The Centre seeks to encourage informed dialogue and greater recognition of gender-related issues within universities and wider society.
