The Gender Equity & Equality Club (GEEC) is a student club operating under the Centre for Gender Studies, University of Kelaniya. Its purpose is to create a gender-sensitive learning environment within the University and promote gender equity and equality among the university community and beyond. According to the portfolio, the club was founded by Dr. Anusha Edirisinghe on 29 November 2019. Another slide records the launch of the Gender Club for university students on 27 November 2019 with FISD, so the portfolio itself contains these two closely related dates.
Since its establishment, GEEC has developed activities aimed at increasing awareness, encouraging dialogue, empowering people, and promoting a more inclusive university and wider community. The portfolio records projects including awareness programmes, workshops, webinars, school programmes and entertainment events, covering topics such as women’s and men’s empowerment, gender mainstreaming, masculinity, and other gender-related concerns.
Initially, club members worked together without separate operational divisions. As the club developed, its activities were organised under four avenues: University Events, School Events, Entertainment Events, and Media & Promotion, each supported by its own director. The 2021/2022 portfolio specifically describes this four-avenue organisational structure.
The club has conducted programmes both inside and outside the University. Examples documented in the portfolio include the “Beyond the Appearance” webinar/workshop series addressing sex and gender-based violence and gender mainstreaming, an Awareness Programme on Health & Gender / Reproductive Health held at Bandaranayake Girls’ Hostel on 9 September 2020, and the annual “Senehase Mathra II” school awareness programme conducted at schools including Galen-Bidunu Wewa Dutuwewa Maha Vidyalaya and Medawachchiya Maithripala Senanayake Madhya Maha Vidyalaya.
The founding 2019/2020 team identified in the portfolio includes Imasha Prasadhini as Founder President and Umesha Chavindi as Founder Secretary; subsequent slides identify Nuwan Dissanayake as Founder Treasurer and Saymini Perera as Editor.
